Dates can change. This page summarizes what AAOMS lists as of October 22, 2026. Always confirm on aaoms.org before you plan around a date or pay a fee.

The short answer

  • When: starting in 2027, AAOMS offers the CBSE in May and November. It used to be February and July. AAOMS lists May 1, 2027 for the first 2027 exam.
  • Registration: AAOMS says registration for the May 2027 exam opens by early November.
  • Fee: $400, which AAOMS says is subject to change. Full payment is due with each online registration.
  • Format: 200 questions over 5 hours and 15 minutes, including an optional 15-minute break.
  • Where: a Prometric testing center.

What changed for 2027

If you read older advice about a February or July exam, it is out of date. The new schedule puts the exam in May and November. That moves the timing for students who used to plan around a summer sitting. It can also change how you count backwards from an application deadline, so check your target programs' requirements as well.

How to register

Registration runs through AAOMS. The AAOMS page for OMS applicants has the registration steps and current details. The exam is open to all dental students who are interested in applying to oral and maxillofacial surgery residency.

Testing centers are assigned first come, first served. AAOMS warns that waiting can limit your choice of site and may mean traveling farther. If you know your target month, register as soon as the window opens.

Fees, cancellations and refunds

The fee is $400 and is paid in full when you register. AAOMS lists a cancellation processing fee and refund cutoff dates, and says no-shows are not refunded. The page's cancellation wording still mentions a July exam, which doesn't match the new May and November schedule, so read the current terms and confirm the dates with AAOMS before you register.

Test day format

The CBSE has 200 questions. AAOMS lists 5 hours and 15 minutes, including an optional 15-minute break. A tutorial at the start of the web exam adds about 15 minutes. If you want to practice that stamina, our CBSE Practice Exam 2026 and CBSE Practice Exam 2027 use the same layout: four timed blocks of 50 questions.

Scores

NBME sends an electronic score report within 30 days, and AAOMS receives a copy. Many programs look at CBSE results alongside the rest of an application, so check each program's own requirements.

Accommodations and problems on test day

AAOMS asks you to contact them within one week of registering if you need ADA accommodations. If something goes wrong during the exam, report it to AAOMS within two days.

Working backwards from your date

  1. Pick the sitting you're aiming for and write down the registration opening.
  2. Choose a study plan that fits the time you have. Our free CBSE study schedules cover 1-year, 18-month and 2-year timelines.
  3. Take a full-length practice exam a few months out, then use the report to decide what to review.
